Fly Patterns

This is one of our grayling fly boxes. This represents over twenty five years of our experience with grayling and what gets their attention. This is not the complete selection, as we do keep some of the more specialized patterns in reserve for the occasional situation when nothing else will work.

There are dry flies, nymphs, beetles, streamers, etc...

Many of these patterns are available through the Orvis company web site at Orvis.Com

The flies range in size from 12's and 14's to 16's, predominately centering on size 14. A few 10's and 18's are also advisable, although not a necessity. 10's, especially bushy 10's, and larger, do not lend themselves to fitting in a graylings mouth, even a large grayling.

Grayling are attracted to the look of the fly, it's size and it's color (or for those that don't believe that fish can see in color; the shade of the fly). Flies with antron, foam and calf's tail will float high and dry for quite a while. When the fly gets wet after prolonged use, you will find, to a noticeable degree, that re-treatment with a floatant can bring back the bite.

It has been said that Grayling are the fish that were created for the dry fly. Hence, most of the time you will find that they take drys. For those that prefer a challenge, use of nymphs is in order.

We have found that instead of matching the hatch, it is more productive to change the size, shape and color (shade) of the fly to correspond to the Grayling's current feeding habits.
